„The Artist Lars Zech uses a chainsaw to create archaic-looking objects from massive tree trunks. With great sensitivity, he reveals what lies hidden beneath the bark, what lies beneath the camouflage oft he bark. He interweaves the archaic and the modern in his works“
Petra Simon
The following reflection by Deike Dowald on the works of Lars Zech serve a suggestion to find access tot he works.
The sculptor Lars Zech creates sculptures of hypnotic, unconventional beauty, wild grandeur and
dominance. This wilfulness and strength of character are essential characteristics of his works and are tob e understood as the antithesis tot he conformity of today.
Lars Zech´s art is created in harmony with nature. His medium is wood, it ist he all-dominant factor in his works. The materiality can, indeed should, be experienced with the hands; it is an important part of the artwork. Through this direct feeling oft he wood, we sense an inherent power in the work. We now enter into a relationship with them not just with our eyes, but with our bodies.
The contours of the work develop from dynamic lines and surfaces that harmonise with each other and are characterised by energy. A graceful ryhtm emerges, the works open and rotate and find a centre of balance despite their movement. The sculptures emerge form their base with complete effortlessness and grow out of themselves. The sweeping wooden slats convey an irrepressible temperament. They testify tot he power of movement and their fanning out gives them an enormous spatiality. These soft forms suggest something alive that goes far beyond a moment of movement.
His works are aimed at our soul, our innermost being, and are everything but decoration.
The often colourful version of his figures never serves to make us forget the material. Zech intuitively emphasises tensions in and between his works with his choice of colour. The black works absorb the light, giving them a serious elegance. They appear more introverted, testify to mystery, perhaps showing their dark, hidden side, while the light-coloured works are closer tot he light. They appear distant at first and reinforce the impression of the awakening of a personality.
Red as the colour of life embodies radiant energy and emphasises the strength and vitality oft he shapes and lines, the passion bound up in them. Pigments and wood merge into a flowing overall tone that both reveals and conceals.
Lars Zech is a true master at breathing life into wood as material. With his dynamic movements in the creative process, he carries himself into his works and combines with the wood to form a unity, exploring the material possibilities a new each time.
The sculptures change our feelings, they offer a special access to our own levels of experience that are not directly tangible for conscious thought. They intensify emotions and reveal thoughts, which is what makes them so magical.
